Dasarathar had not given word to Kaikeyi that he would make Bharathan as his successor before their marriage. He had only given her a boon to ask for anything which she brought it up at the time of pattAbhishekam and asked for Bharathan to become king. Hence he was shocked by her request. Not the way it was presented here as if he knew he had made a mistake and hence decided to do Rama's pattabhishekam overnight in a hush-hush manner. pl correct me if i am wrong.
